Chapter 19

It took over four days, but by the dawn of the fifth, everyone who survived the Siege of Caerleone had been transferred from Dornwich to the Silver Wolf Academy. The school wasn’t built to house thousands, but that was exactly why Garret had the refugees brought to the academy. The numerous dragon summoners were able to build, from scratch, a makeshift town.

Fortunately, Lady Ysabel had survived. She led an evening funeral for Lord Ghalen, Lord Grahm, and the numerous people who had died during the siege. She also officiated the renewal of peace between House Vilfort and the crown, represented by Queen Celine Mithra Fraeldhen.

Garret, Null, and Selina donated the money they received for the previous job—which was a shock to them, given all that happened and for it to still be officiated in the records as a job—for the rebuilding of Caerleone. However, they had a bigger issue to resolve: they still had to go back to Danustre and rescue King Symond.

To finish what they started, Queen Celine made it official and hired Team Iron Clad to lead the rescue operation. She then hired several other dragon summoner squads to begin the repairs on Caerleone. Though she had been under the influence of the Zirconium Dragon, the queen still felt responsible for all the death and destruction. She even requested the release of Head Minister Lord Sybaris. He had still broken the law by accepting that kind of work, though, so he would need to face the judgment of the royal court.

She did initiate a program to help repair the relationship between Silver Wolf and Sky River. Conflict like the recent battle wasn’t typical between academies, and it was all because of the Zirconium Dragon. She made it a point to fix what was lost in the war that took place.

Garret, Selina, and Null—who refused to let anyone else know about his background—joined a large caravan of merchants heading to Danustre. The caravan had already hired dragon summoners from Golem, which allowed Team Iron Clad to take it easy and rest for the journey. Given how large the caravan was, it took a lot longer than usual to reach their destination. A journey that would take three to four days now took six.

By the end of the sixth day, they finally walked through the majestic southern gates of Danustre, the royal capital city of Fraeldhen.

Unlike Caerleone or Oakhelm, which were border cities with infrastructure related to trade and survival, Danustre was the center of culture. This was where people went to study the arts, watch the most exquisite shows, or listen to the most popular bards. This was where the kingdom’s underground casino resided, where one could find the gladiatorial arena, and the latest when it came to fashion.

Being a city in the middle of the desert, it was easy to assume that Danustre would be all sand and dry air. However, thanks to the innovations of the royal family over hundreds of years, Danustre flourished thanks to its oasis that stretched in a circle around the whole city.
